"Sports Media in a changing society"smita mishra

India is a host country of 2010 Commonwealth Games. So the sports scenario in India as well in world sports is changing rapidly. Media gets the new avenues as well as challenges. Though cricket is all time favourite sports of Indians but the interest in other sports is also growing very fast.

These were the thoughts shared by eminent sports journalists in a one day seminar on "SPORTS Media in a Changing Society" organized by the Hindi Department on 4th Dec. 2008 at college premises. Prof. J.S. Naruka (Director of Sports, Delhi University) inaugurated the seminar. On this occasion the sports edition of college student newspaper Aagaz also released by Prof. Naruka. He said that sports scenario is changing rapidly because of 2010 Commonwealth Games. Though it is true that cricket is the most popular game in India but recent achievers of other sports are also catching eyes of people as well as media.

T.V. anchor Nikil Naaz said that earlier there were very few programmes on television based on sports. Senior sports journalist G. Rajaraman suggested to media students that they should try to acquire more and more knowledge of respective games and should be ready to work hard of they want to enter in a sports Media. T.V. Journalist Arjun J. Chaudhuri put emphasis on the totally new area on sports economics. He analyzed the relationship between sports and market forces. He said cricket is getting more importance of the market because it is the most popular game. That's why cricket is having strongest brand approach. Padmashri D.R. Mohsin Wali (R.M.L. Hospital) impressed the audience with beautiful power point presentation on sports injuries. He also explained the importance of sports medicine. Jayant Tomar and Rahul Tripathi from sports journalism department of LNIPE Gwalior, gave a detailed history of sports Journalism. Principal Dr. Jaswinder Singh said that new dimensions have been opened in the field of sports journalism. Today's sports journalism presents sportspersons as an icon so that the youth could get inspiration. Seminar co-ordinator Dr Smita Mishra underlined the inter relationship of sports and market. She said the rules & structure of games is altering according to market to earn more revenue. Convener of the Department Dr. Sumita Lohia gave vote of thanks. In 2nd session various teachers of delhi university presented papers on various aspects of sports.Caption writing and Question framing compitions were also organized for students.
